Helsinki is the World Design Capital in 2012 together with Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti. The objective of the World Design Capital year is to improve the daily lives and environment of the residents and to develop public services and business activities through design. The World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 year comprises about 250 independent projects, open public events, and encounters of design professionals from all over the world. The World Design Capital is selected every other year. The World Design Capital is an initiative of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid).
While there are many awards that recognize individual accomplishments in design, the World Design Capital (WDC) designation is unique as it aims to focus on the broader essence of design’s impact on urban spaces, economies and citizens. The designation provides a distinctive opportunity for cities to feature their accomplishments in attracting and promoting innovative design, as well as highlight their successes in urban revitalization strategies. The World Design Capital is an initiative of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid).
The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) is a non-profit organization that protects and promotes the interests of the profession of industrial design. Together, professional associations, promotional societies, educational institutions, government bodies and corporations create a comprehensive and diverse system on the forefront of industrial design education and progress.
Klaus K Hotel is part of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 initiative as an official Signature Hotel and works closely with the organisation. Our aim is to generate new ideas for ways of developing our guest experience and environment through design, as well as to create opportunities for new innovations. This way, we can together make our venue as one of the most interesting places to visit, be yourself and enjoy even just a regular weekday.
WDC Helsinki 2012 gives us the opportunity of producing a better city – through design. Everyone can be involved: the city, residents, businesses and educational institutions. We want to draw people’s attention to design and its importance in life and society. We encourage people to produce ideas and to create a better city by developing products, services, processes and working environments. We offer experiences and encounters with design both at home and internationally. We create opportunities for new business and innovations. Our goal is permanent change. The year 2012 is the beginning.
- Let’s make a more functional city.

- Let’s make a more beautiful city.
- Let’s make a happier city.
- “Our aim is together to make our city more functional and welcoming.”
- “To us, the World Design Capital means that our city will be a better place to live.”
All this is improving the city.
Cities belong to their inhabitants. World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 offers us ways of taking part in improving our environment and developing our city. In an open city, people listen to the city and the city listens to people.
The language of design is international. Through design, we can improve people’s daily lives across countries, languages and political boundaries. The role of design thinking will become increasingly important in activating change and keeping up sustainable development.
Design contains a great opportunity. We want to show that investment in design is not just worthwhile, but imperative. Companies that make good use of design do better than average. Services that utilize design often bring savings. We are convinced that design helps businesses to grow and strengthens the functioning of the public sector.
