The Tall Ships Races Helsinki 2013


The Tall Ships Races – the great old ships are returning visit Helsinki harbour after 13 years having passed since the last time they sailed in the waters of Helsinki.

A total of 114 ships will be arriving to the city in July. The largest of these, the Russian Kruzhenshtern, will have a crew of 225 sailing students. The main event ground in Hietalahti where a variety of goings-on from morning to night will be hosted. In addition to the ships, free entertainment will be seen on three stages. All program in the Sinebrychoff park is aimed at kids. The event grounds also feature food, drink and souvenirs stalls, enabling visitors to stay in the area the whole day. You will find all this just with a 5min walking distance from Klaus K Hotel!

The official program starts on July 17th but the first ships may arrive in Helsinki already a couple of days earlier. Stay tuned about the arrival and docking of ships by follow the updates on Twitter, Facebook or Google+ as it’s a magnificent display to watch. Hernesaari, Jätkäsaari, Pihlajasaari and Suomenlinna are all great locations for a picnic to enjoy this spectacular event. The opening ceremony will be held on Wednesday 17 July on the Main Stage in the Hietalahti market and the event is both free of charge and open to everyone.

On Thursday 18 July, people will get the chance to enjoy the joyous, carnivalesque crew parade along the Bulevardi street. The parade will begin at 15.00. Come and cheer the crews on, while also finding out the ship whose drums and horns blast and blare the loudest and feet stomp the hardest. At the conclusion of the parade, the prizes for the first leg of The Tall Ships Races 2013 contest will be handed out on the Main Stage. The audience will have the chance to vote for the best/funniest/quirkiest crew, so come on down and place your votes on social media! The parade will be passing right in front of Klaus K hotel on Bulevardi – feel free to come and enjoy the parade from our terrace!

In the closing ceremony on Friday 19 July, the ships will blast their fog horns as a thank you to the host harbour. Can identify ships in different categories by the sound of their fog horns?

On Saturday 20th of July, The Tall Ships Races Helsinki 2013 event will climax with the Parade of Sails, marking the tall ships’ departure for the next TSR harbour, Riga. The excitement of the start can be experienced at the Hietalahti basin, starting from 1:30 p.m. At 4 p.m., the ships will gather, in full sail, around the Harmaja lighthouse, from where they will take a course toward the Kasuuni lighthouse. Members of the audience will find optimal viewing places at the southern tip of the Suomenlinna island. Recretional yachtsmen escorting the tall ships are requested to keep south of the Harmaja lighthouse.
