Helsinki’s premiere design hotel launches the Klaus K Entrepreneurial Innovation Award

The winner of the first-ever Klaus K Entrepreneurial Innovation Award will be announced on November 13, 2013at Slush, one of the world’s top start-up events.

“We want to showcase a dynamic innovation that adds to quality of life, longevity and sustainability,” says Marc Skvorc, General Manager of the family-owned hotel, which is a member of Design Hotels™, a curated selection of 250 independent and highly original hotels in 40 countries.

A unique product or service that fills a niche in the marketplace, the winning innovation will be backed by a strong, ambitious team with an attractive business development model and a global go-to-market strategy.

To be awarded once a year, the Klaus K Entrepreneurial Innovation Award will be selected by a prestigious jury comprised of Finnish business leaders Anne Berner, Owner of Vallila Interiors; Pekka Mattila, Group Managing Director and CEO at Aalto University Executive Education; Will Cardwell, Senior Advisor, Global Alliances at Aalto University; and Marc Skvorc, General Manager of Klaus K.

The winner will have a unique opportunity to showcase their innovation in Klaus’s LIVINGROOM, a new work-leisure lobby space that was designed using co-creation. “Our way of working is about challenging the traditional aspects of the hotel business,” says Skvorc. “It’s for the people and by the people.”

Along with a trophy created by “Seven Eggs of Kalevala” designer Panu Turunen, the winner will receive 10 complimentary Klaus K hotel room nights to be used while the innovation is being installed in the hotel’s Living Room and to nurture the creative process. A €1,000 entertainment credit for food and beverages in the hotel will accompany the award. The idea is that the entrepreneur can use this award as an asset in his or her pursuit of customers, investors and partners.

Named Finland’s Leading Hotel by the World Travel Awards in 2012, Klaus K was inspired by the Finnish national epic The Kalevala and is located in the historic Rake Block in the heart of Helsinki. Part of Klaus K’s vision is to create and foster a “Destination Bulevardi,” where neighbors and hotel guests are welcome to hang out and participate in events ranging from fashion brunches to art openings and informal gatherings. Some of Helsinki’s top restaurants including Toscanini, Boulevard Social and Gaijin are on the block, while Klaus K’s in-house Ahjo Club provides a chic venue for dancing, drinking and chilling out. Recently opened Swedish home accessories shop Granit rounds out the modish offerings on the street.

Slush, one of the world’s top start-up events, is held every autumn in the Finnish capital. With a focus on Northern Europe and Russian, Slush attracted €30 billion worth of venture capital in 2012, along with some of the world’s top media and more than 3,500 attendees.
